We're very excited that Brodie will make the transition from Yoga West student to regular Yoga West class teacher from next year. We thought it would be nice to share this short interview to help you get to know him a little better before he starts regular classes at the studio.

How did you get in to yoga?

Well it’s more that Yoga got into me.
Yoga was part of our daily curriculum while I was studying at Drama School 16yrs ago and as an Actor it helps enormously to achieve breath control, flexibility, stamina, and keeping the mind and body calm, relaxed and stress free - Key Tools required to be "in the moment" and give a great performance. Key Tools as I discovered for Life’s performance. And so the union was formed.

Was there a moment when you realised that you wanted to pursue yoga seriously?

After 12 years treading the boards as a singer dancer I had my fair share of aches and pains to try and bring me down but Yoga has helped me maintain a positive attitude. So, when people kept asking me for advice on exercises they should be doing for this ache or that pain, or how they could improve their strength and mental well being, I'd happily pass on what I could and it was their constant encouragement and requests to teach them that inspired me to pursue this path.

How has yoga changed you?

I'm Happier!! I'm Focused!! and I'm Calmer when under pressure.
Because apart from physically toning and strengthening my muscles and giving me greater mobility as I ascend the ladder of age, Yoga has taken my mind on a journey. A journey of Self discovery and Acceptance. Acceptance of who I am and what I'm about. An acceptance of others and their Journey. It's given me balance & purpose and I think that's important to live a full and happy life. That and living in the present moment.
Besides, I've met and made some wonderful friends in the Yoga community who continue to inspire me to make the most of who I am and what this world has to offer, as they do.
That's a change I'll make any day!!

What is your approach to teaching?

I like to challenge your BODY, engage your MIND and liven your SPIRIT. I try to inspire strength in all its forms through a calm creativity bringing focus on the breath to encourage and develop a mind body connection, hoping to leave my fellow yogis feeling uplifted and empowered by their own sense of goodness and connected with their "True Self " and that Divine Nature within.

What advice would you give to people who are considering taking up yoga?

Always try something twice - just to get a true sense of what you experienced. As One of my Life motto’s I apply this to everything...yes, everything! 😉

So Come! - Enjoy the ‘magic’ this pool of Life has to offer. Dip your feet in and go for a swim. Make some time to test the waters of your soul and explore the hidden treasures deep within you.

Discover the magic of YOGA! Discover the True You!

And bring a friend - help enhance their life too 😉

Do you have a favourite yoga quote?

"Have a new experience!" ..........isn’t that what Life is all about? ....and...

"Don't suffer the body for the glory of the pose! " is also a favourite.
So many of us want to prove to ourselves that we can do a pose at the expense of possible injury and my advice is to be patient, Yoga is a lifelong practice, we all must learn to....and here's another favourite quote " challenge our boundaries but accept our limitations". We must look at our asana practice like building a house and start with the foundation then slowly build the layers, making sure everything is in its place before putting on the roof and living in it.
So take your time, enjoy where you're at, and breathe: you'll know when it's time to build the roof.

Is there anything outside your yoga that people should know?

Laugh! Laugh at yourself, laugh with others, laugh when you don't know what else to do - just Laugh. I have a cheeky sense of playfulness and I try and find humour in everything because besides Yoga I think laughing is one of the greatest things we can do for ourselves and each other. You'll always find someone to laugh with because laughing is infectious and it stirs up all the right things our body and mind needs to make us feel good and I love making people feel good.
